For the mountain pine beetle Dendroctonus ponderosae, exo-brevicomin is one of two important aggregation pheromone components. It is produced by males as they emerge from the brood tree and synergizes the female produced component, (-)-trans-verbenol. Song et al.(2014) showed that CYP6CR1 epoxidized (Z)-6-nonen-2-one to 6,7-epoxynonan-2-one with very high specificity and substrate selectivity, as the penultimate step in exo-brevicomin biosynthesis.
