Drosophila suzukii, originally from southeast Asia, is becoming a major pest species in America and Europe because it infests fruit early during the ripening stage, in contrast with other Drosophila species that infest only rotting fruit.

Drosophila suzukii diverged from the D. melanogaster lineage about 10-15 MYA (Ometto et al., 2013).
When compared to D. melanogaster, D. suzukii has lost CYP4D2, CYP9B1 and CYP316A1. Several genes are duplicated when compared to D.melanogaster: CYP4D21, CYP4P2, CYP6A20, CYP6A23, CYP6D5, CYP12A4 and CYP12D1 are each duplicated once, and CYP28A5 is duplicated twice. D. melanogaster pseudogenes CYP6A15P and CYP6A16P are functional genes in D.suzukii. CYP12D3, absent in D. melanogaster and pseudogene in D. sechellia is a functional gene in D. suzukii as in D.simulans. CYP6A18 is a pseudogene in this assembly, but is functional in the JAYGJW02 assembly.
